Residents of 20 nearby homes were evacuated Monday afternoon (May 7) after two houses caught fire in the Pineview area of Fort Saskatchewan.

The two homes were destroyed in the blaze, with estimated damages of about $750,000, but there were no reports of any serious injuries.

The fire department is still investigating the cause of the fire. Based on preliminary information, the RCMP doesn't expect to pursue any criminal charges in the incident.

RCMP were dispatched to the scene of the fire at about 3:05 p.m. after receiving a 911 call. The Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department got the blaze under control while RCMP and municipal enforcement officers helped people in neighbouring homes to safety.

Members of the Strathcona County RCMP and the Victim Services Unit also attended the emergency to assist residents affected by the fires.

“This was a great team effort between all first responders,” said Sergeant Mike McCreedy of the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP.  “We’re so glad to be able to report that no one was seriously injured, and we appreciate the assistance from the public while we responded to this incident.”

Evacuated residents were able to return to their homes at around 6 p.m.
