The Strathcona County RCMP is crediting members of the public with their help in a recent arrest.
On Monday night (June 28) around 8:20 p.m., an off-duty RCMP officer witnessed a hit and run in the Summerton Gate area.
Police were able to find the suspect's vehicle, which was driving in an erratic manner, going over curbs and using excessive speed.
"We did activate our lights and he refused to stop,” explained RCMP Corporal Steve Bereza.
The driver then hit a police vehicle, causing extensive damage, and drove off again.
Witnesses pointed police to where the driver had stopped in a residential neighbourhood and the suspect ran on foot.
"The public really helped us; I definitely want to pass that on."
Mounties were able to catch Cory Heggenstaller from Edmonton.
Heggenstaller was charged with the following:
- Breach of conditional sentence order
- Dangerous operation
- Fail to stop after a collision
- Flight from a peace officer
- Traffic Safety Act x3
The 41-year-old had his first court date on June 30 in Sherwood Park.
