With October just around the corner, people are already getting into the Halloween spirit.
Local artist Chelsea Tobias is showing her excitement by entering the Face of Horror Halloween makeup competition.
Born in Fort Saskatchewan and growing up in the Bruderheim-Chipman area, Tobias' appreciation for horror makeup started after watching Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street series.
"I would always try to recreate the burns of [Freddy Krueger's] face," she said.
Her other influences range from TV shows like The Walking Dead to Glow Up.
Tobias suffers from fibromyalgia, a condition that causes widespread pain and sleep problems. Her condition has been keeping her from work since 2016.
"Even my makeup and my art, it takes a lot of time and effort just because I'm in constant pain."
Tobias said she was hesitant about entering the competition, but gained confidence through the support of her husband Kyle and best friend Stacy Audet.
Chelsea and Kyle have been married for eight years now and have two sons, Pierce (9) and Riley (10).
As for Audet, the two often watch horror movies together.
"I told her if I win this we're going to go and stay in Buffalo Bill's house together."
Chelsea discovered the Face of Horror competition while scrolling through Facebook. The contest is for U.S. and Canadian horror enthusiasts, with proceeds being donated to the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, a charity supporting the fight against childhood cancer.
The contest runs off a voting system. You can vote once a day for free, but to vote more you can make a donation with a dollar going towards each vote.
A two-night stay at Buffalo Bill's house is one of the many prizes for the winner. Other prizes include a role in an indie film, a photoshoot with horror legend Kane Hodder, and a grand prize of $13,000.
Chelsea currently has the third highest vote count, with voting for the top 15 ending on Thursday (Sept. 22). You can vote for Chelsea Tobias here.
